Fall at Whippoorwill
We've got lots of activities on tap at the store this fall, starting with a fund raiser for our favorite charity, CERF, Craft Emergency Relief Fund.
October 15 - 27, Seconds for CERF
A hurricane, a flood, a studio fire, a health crisis. It was common practice to pass the hat at craft fairs when fellow artists were dealing with emergency situations. In 1985 artists pulled together and formed CERF to build on these grass roots efforts.
A million and a half dollars later of financial support to artists, Whippoorwill is one of dozens of galleries nationally who run yearly fund raisers for CERF and support artists in need.
Artists and Whippoorwill have been accumulating studio seconds and discontinued items for you to purchase at greatly discounted prices.
Come get a great bargain and help support artists in need!
The Photographer's Eye. A Special View of the Photos of Local Arist Jennifer Matson.
November 5 - 18
Meet the Artist, November 8, 4:30 - 6PM
There is nothing usual about Jennifer Matson's photographs. She can take a location that we pass by every day and turn it into a romantic wonderland. "Boston is a beautiful city to live in and photograph, and I try to show views of the city even people who live here don't see!" All of Jen's work is original photography, not digital prints, using existing light, unmanipulated and printed in her darkroom.
The night photos are long exposures taken using a tripod. With long exposure people and cars disappear although you might occasionally see the ghosts of headlights and taillights adding mystery to a photo.
At this special show, Jen is previewing travel photos from Italy and her black and white work in addition to a large collection of Boston scenes.
November 20 - December 1 Eye Candy. The Jewelry of Jill Elizabeth
Pennsylvania artist Jill ELizabeth knew she had a passion at 11. Jill's designs are fresh, personal and eye catching. Each pin is individually hand made of architectural mirror, antique and vintage stones, and colored wires.
December 3 - 4
Arts and Crafts Tiles and Clocks
Narwal and Karim Motawi; Jane and Michael Schlabaugh
Brother and sister Narwal and Karim recreate the style and aesthetic influences of 20th century artists such as Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Dard Hunter and Charles Voysey. Cherry and oak clocks, bookends, boxes, lamps by the Schlabaughs.
Big News! Whippoorwill Moved in 2005 Whippoorwill is now open at 93 Franklin Street in Downtown Boston - at the corner of Franklin and Devonshire Streets, two blocks behind Filene's Basement.
This is a beautiful space in an 1873 brick building that is on the National Historic Register. The ceilings are 12 feet high (won't that be wonderful), the six 10 foot windows are on the street level (even more wonderful), and the floor is three times the size of the old Faneuil Hall store (yipee!). We are so happy on all those accounts.
We brought all your favorites from Faneuil Hall with us and added lots of new work that we could not carry before such as furniture, wall art, gold jewelry, art glass, fiber and much more. Can you tell how excited we are??
The Faneuil Hall store has closed and your favorite staff people - Dee and Myfanwy have moved over to the new store.
Hours at the Franklin Street store are Monday though Friday 10 to 6, Saturday 11 to 4. The phones there are 617-422-0025 and 888-522-4888 or you can use my cell phone, 617-742-5267.
Founding Member of C.R.A.F.T. Whippoorwill is proud to be a founding member of C.R.A.F.T.- Craft Retailers' Association for Tomorrow. Three years old, this is an organization of craft galleries and shops working to encourage creativity and artistic excellence in American Craft, network with each other, and promote high ethical standards and business practices within the craft community. I am serving on the Board of Directors of CRAFT. I love the meetings with Gloria in Florida, Donna in Texas, David in WDC and Sandra in MI (among others!) and me in Boston. We spend two hours on a Wednesday morning monthly in a conference call meeting- a great way to have a meeting.
If you have any questions or thoughts about something C.R.A.F.T. should consider, please contact me. Use my email- hohassoc@aol.com.
Update - In April 2007, I was voted in as President of the Board. I am excited to be able to work more closely with this great group of people from all across the country and to help make the craft community a little stronger, more professional and better coordinated. <^..^>
